Understanding Directional Boring

Directional boring is a minimally invasive, trenchless technique for installing underground conduits, pipes, and cables without disturbing existing landscapes or hardscapes. Using a specialized machine equipped with a series of “rods,” a sloped drill bit is guided through the soil. This bit features a locator beacon, trackable from the surface, which provides real-time data on the bit’s angle, direction, depth, and slope orientation. These precise metrics allow operators to pinpoint the drill bit’s location and trajectory within an inch of accuracy. By carefully pushing or rotating the bit, we can steer it along a controlled path or maintain a straight course as needed.

Upon completing the bore, the drill bit is excavated, and the desired pipe or conduit is attached. For pipes exceeding 2 inches in diameter, a reamer is used to widen the borehole. The reamer or drill head is then rotated and pulled back, drawing the pipe into place. This process leaves the surrounding landscape and hardscape virtually undisturbed, with only minimal disruption at the entry and exit points.
